5 Days Program for Visiting Amsterdam
Amsterdam is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. If you’ve ever been to Amsterdam, you know that it has a unique culture and style that makes it unlike any other place on Earth. You’ll want to spend as much time as possible exploring this city, but if you’re only able to visit for a short period of time then make sure not to miss out on some of the best attractions! I’ve outlined our favorite things to do over 5 days so that you can get the most out of your trip no matter how long or short it is:
Day 1
Day 1: Arrival in Amsterdam
Arrive at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, pick up your rental car and drive to the center of Amsterdam. The drive takes about 30 minutes, depending on traffic conditions and whether or not you stop at one of the many museums along the way (we recommend that you do).
Once you reach your hotel/Airbnb apartment/hostel/etc., take some time to drop off your bags before heading out into town. The first thing we recommend doing is visiting two must-see attractions: The Anne Frank House and Van Gogh Museum! They’re both located near each other in an area known as Museum Quarter so it’s easy enough to visit both without having to take public transportation or anything else like that (though if you want more options for getting around later on this post will tell you all about them).
Day 2
- Visit the Van Gogh Museum.
- Visit the Anne Frank House.
- Visit the Rijksmuseum (and maybe even go inside).
- Take a tour of some kind at the Dutch Resistance Museum, which is just down from Central Station and has free tours in English on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11am and 4pm! It’s also worth checking out their exhibits about women during World War II–there’s one on now until January 13th that looks really interesting.
Day 3
On the third day, you can visit the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House. The latter is a must-see for anyone who has read or seen anything about World War II. It’s also very interesting to see how it looks today compared with how it did in its original form when Anne lived there during her adolescence.
The Rijksmuseum is another great place to visit on this day, especially if art is your thing! This museum contains many famous Dutch paintings from artists like Rembrandt and Vermeer. There are even some modern pieces too if you’re looking for something more contemporary!
Day 4
Day 4
In Amsterdam, there are over 100 museums. The majority of them are free and open from 9am to 6pm (with some exceptions for special exhibitions). You can find a list of all the museums here.
If you’re looking for something specific, here are some of our favorites:
- The Rijksmuseum houses one of the best collections in Europe with works from Vincent van Gogh and Rembrandt van Rijn among others. They also have an impressive collection of Chinese porcelain as well as a reconstruction of an old Dutch house dating back to 17th century Amsterdam!
- If you’re into art history then visit Stedelijk Museum where you’ll find paintings by Mondrian, Picasso and many other famous artists throughout history! This museum also happens to be located right across from De Pijp area so make sure not miss out on visiting this amazing place while visiting Amsterdam!
Day 5
Day 5:
- Visit the Rijksmuseum, one of Amsterdam’s most famous museums. It houses an enormous collection of Dutch art and artifacts, including Rembrandt’s Night Watch and Vermeer’s Milkmaid.
- Then head over to see Vincent van Gogh’s paintings at the Van Gogh Museum, which has been open since 1973 and is located in a former orphanage where he lived for a time as a child. The museum also has exhibits on other artists who influenced Van Gogh such as Gauguin and Cezanne.
- Take some time out from all your sightseeing by visiting Anne Frank House–a museum dedicated to Anne Frank (one of history’s most famous diarists) who wrote about her experiences hiding from Nazis during World War II while living in Amsterdam with her family before being captured by them at age 15 (she died at age 19).
